Energy Savings is a major driving influence in most modern lighting projects. Automatic controls like occupancy and daylight sensors are some of the most effective energy saving measures available today. It is almost certain at least some fluorescent the T8 and T5 luminaries on almost every project will be installed in automatically controlled areas.

Depending on actual load switching profiles and sensor settings, automatic controls can create environments where fixtures will be switched on and off frequently. The use of instant start electronic ballast in situations where the fixtures will be switched on and off more than 4 times a day can lead to reduced lamp and ballast life and void manufacturer's warrantees. Although a bit more expensive, it is important to specify parallel rapid start (PAR-RS) or program start ballast (PAR-PS) where automatic controls are used or where extended lamp and ballast life is an issue. Rapid start ballast are good and will allow around 20,000 switching cycles over the life of the lamps. Program start ballast are by far the best and will allow around 50,000 switching cycles.

Please be sure to ask your clients and customers if sensors are being used and bring this to our attention. You must indicate the need for PAR-PS ballast in your specifications, RFQs, and Purchase orders. Unless otherwise specified, standard instant start electronic ballast will be used.
